Time to Trim Trees: Emerald Ash Borer Hibernates

If you have an ash tree in your yard now is the perfect time to trim it up or take it down.

The emerald ash borer, a beetle that attacks and kills ash trees, is hibernating until spring.

The beetle is inactive between Labor Day and May 1st most years, but since this year has been unusually warm, it was active through September.

Protect Young Trees from Deer Damage Now

If you're planting new trees in the late summer and fall, Minnetonka officials say you need to act now to prevent any damage from deer.

Trees should be protected with hardware cloth, welded wire or a plastic guard from mid-August through April.

The deer like to rub their antlers on the stems of deciduous trees and can shred the tree trunk, killing the tissue under the bark.

It's time to clear out all the junk again. Carver will hold it's annual Clean-Up Day this Saturday, May 21.

Elite Waste Disposal will be doing a curbside pickup beginning at 7 a.m. In addition to regular trash items, they will also be collecting furniture, carpet, matresses, box springs, yard waste and light construction material. Items must be out to the curb by 7 a.m.

Arboretum's 32,000 Tulips, Most Stunning in Years

Folks are tweeting about the amazing tulip display at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum in Chaska this year.

Nearly 32,000 tulips were planted last fall and most of them are open, arboretum officials say, thanks to the slow, cool spring.  They tweeted Thursday that its the "best ever."

The flower display includes rhododendrons, magnolias and hyacinths.

Deadline to Pre-Order Rain Barrels, Compost Bins Approaching

The deadline for Carver County residents to pre-order rain barrels and compost bins is coming up fast.

In order to guarantee a barrel or bin will be available, residents must pre-order them by April 15 by calling 952-361-1800.

Rain barrels are being sold for $45 each, and compost bins are $35. Payment is due upon pickup on April 30.
